Five Jesuits Ordained to the Priesthood

Five Jesuits were ordained to the priesthood Saturday, June 14, 2014, before a full house of family, friends and fellow Jesuits at St. Francis Xavier “College” Church in St. Louis.

The five are from the Missouri and New Orleans provinces that will consolidate into one province on July 31. St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson presided.

The five are: Robert Murphy of Metairie La.; Nathan O’Halloran of rural New Mexico; Michael Rozier of Ste. Genevieve, Mo.; Christopher Schroeder of St. Louis; and Dong “Derek” Phuong Hong Vo of Vietnam. A sixth Jesuit, Eric Ramirez, from San Angelo, Texas, in the New Orleans province, will be ordained to the priesthood July 19 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in San Antonio, Texas, by Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller.

The celebration began with a procession of dozens of their brother Jesuits filing into the historic church from outside.

Through ancient rituals and words, the men were brought into their new role as priests. The men lay on the floor down the length of the church as a sign of humility. Later, each would approach the archbishop for placement of hands on the head. Later still, a Jesuit of each of the five men’s choosing would assist him in vesting. Later still, Provincials Mark Lewis and Douglas Marcouiller, followed by every Jesuit in the church, offered each newly ordained man a hug and warm wishes at the Kiss of Peace.

Once ordained, each man approached and took his place at the altar to concelebrate the Eucharist.

Words by Carlson summed it up: “May God begin the good work in you …”
