Superior General Makes Apostolic Visit

Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, made a brief pastoral visit to the US Central and Southern Province early in May. Father General met with about 50 Jesuits and a small group of lay collaborators in New Orleans on Saturday, May 7.

Father General Nicolás traveled to New Orleans with Provincial Superior Ronald Mercier and former Missouri Provincial Douglas Marcouiller, who now serves in Rome as a General Counselor and Regional Assistant for the United States and Canada. All three men had attended a weeklong meeting in El Salvador of the leaders of the provinces in Latin America, the United States and Canada.

This apostolic visit included Mass, a meal and an informal conversation with the Jesuits living in New Orleans. Jesuits also traveled from Mobile, Ala., Convent, La. and Grand Coteau, La., to meet with the Superior General, including the men studying at the novitiate.

Later in the day, Fr. General Nicolás met with a small group of lay colleagues, leaders from Jesuit apostolates in the area: Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Immaculate Conception Parish, Jesuit High School, Loyola University, Manresa Retreat House in Convent, La. and Our Lady of the Oaks Retreat House, as well as several members of the province staff. Fr. Nicolás made a short presentation, offering a moving and sincere expression of thanks, then responded to specific questions.

Father Provincial Ron Mercier noted that the Superior General emphasized the “great gift of our lay colleagues …Their commitment to our mission and the talents they bring make possible the extension of the mission of the Society beyond what we could do alone, even if our numbers were 10 times greater than they are. He called us Jesuits to a fuller appreciation of God’s work through our colleagues.”

This is likely to be Fr. General Nicolás’ final visit to the United States as superior general. He has asked for and received the permission of Pope Francis to offer his resignation as superior general this fall during the Society’s General Congregation.

The mission of the superior general in the Society of Jesus is to guide the religious order according to the Constitutions and the Guidelines of the General Congregations, the highest authority within the Jesuits. A native of Spain, Adolfo Nicolás has held the position since 2008.
