The Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province is currently researching the lives of the people held in slavery by Jesuits in the central United States from 1823 to 1865.
We are now reaching out to the community to ask for help. We invite descendants and scholars to join us in this important research, and through dialogue, find a path toward reconciliation.
An overview of the family traits shared by descendants is available here.
If you think you or someone you know might be descended from the people held in slavery by Jesuits, please contact the Slavery, History, Memory and Reconciliation Project:
HistoryResearch@Jesuits.org
or call 314-376-2440.
See the interactive map below for descriptions of historically significant locations to both enslaved laborers and possible descendants.
