Rockhurst Names Fr. Bill Sheahan Interim President

Father William T. Sheahan, SJ, will serve as the interim president for Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo. effective this July.

Jonathan R. Haden (Rockhurst ’75), Chairman of the Rockhurst Board of Trustees, made the announcement Feb. 7, noting that the board chose Fr. Sheahan “because of his demonstrated devotion to Catholic education, the Jesuit vision, and the mission of Rockhurst High School.”

Jesuit Father Terrence A. Baum, SJ, previously announced he will conclude his service to Rockhurst High in July after 13 years as president. David J. Laughlin, currently president of St. Louis University High School will join Rockhurst in July of 2018.

A member of this province, Father Sheahan currently serves as rector of the Rockhurst Jesuit Community. He has deep ties to Rockhurst High School and Ignatian formation. He joined the Rockhurst faculty during the fall of 2008 to teach Theology and English. He was the founder and original director of the Hurtado Scholars Program, a middle school mentoring program aimed at increasing diversity at Rockhurst High.

The Jesuit Social Research Institute has received a generous grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for important research on economic imbalances, racial inequity and food justice in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Juan Rodriguez is the father of three daughters, two of whom are students at Cristo Rey Jesuit Houston High School. Since 2007, he has complied with all Immigrations and Customs Enforcement procedures, but now he's in danger of deportation.

The Osage collection in the Jesuit Archives contains correspondence and administrative records of the Jesuit Mission to the Osage Nation, established in 1847. But the real treasure is the documents in the Osage language, now nearly extinct.

May 30, 2017 — More than 65 presidents of Catholic colleges and universities — including Loyola University New Orleans, Rockhurst University and Spring Hill College — urged Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to protect undocumented students.

Father Carl Dehne, SJ, died May 13, 2017, in St. Louis. He was 80 years old, a Jesuit for 58 years and a priest for 46 years.
