Jesuits Announce New Alum Service Corps Cohort 28 Volunteers

July 12, 2018 - The Jesuit-sponsored Alum Service Corps (ASC) announced that 12 young men and women will commit a year of service to six Jesuit schools of the USA Central and Southern (UCS) Province of the Society of Jesus. In gratitude for their Jesuit education, ASC volunteers give a year of post-college service by volunteering as mentors and teachers in six UCS Jesuit schools in Denver, Kansas City and St. Louis. While living in community with each other, volunteers adopt a simple lifestyle and strive to grow spiritually.

“Continuing a long trajectory of service rooted in Ignatian spirituality, ASC’s Cohort 28 embodies the ideals of Jesuit education,” said Ron Rebore, Ph.D., associate provincial assistant for secondary and pre-secondary education. “Like their more than 300 predecessors, the new members model not only deep gratitude for their Jesuit education, but also a visible commitment to justice and community.”

The 12 new volunteers have graduated from seven different colleges and universities, two of them sponsored by the Jesuits, including Creighton University and Saint Louis University. Cohort 28 also includes alumni of the University of Mississippi, the University of Tampa, Montana State University, and the University of Missouri.

Over 50 percent of the new ASCs attended one of four Jesuit high schools: De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo., and St. Louis University High School in St. Louis.

ASC Cohort 28 brings an impressive breadth of experience in leadership, activities and service, as well as enthusiastic desire to give back.

Members of ASC 28 are meeting in person for the first time this week at an orientation outside of St. Louis. Following orientation, they move into residences provided specifically for them by their schools. After this, they begin preparing on site for their responsibilities, which include teaching, mentoring, coaching, tutoring and working closely with students and colleagues.

ASC mentors and teachers gather as a group three times during the year from across three cities for retreats as part of their Ignatian formation – training in the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. More than 300 ASC volunteers have served students, with gratitude, in UCS Province schools for more than 25 years.

Meet the members of ASC 28.
