Pierre Edward Luc, S.J., 33, was born in the small village of Chardonnette, Haiti. After graduating from Lycée Horatius Laventure in Port-au-Prince in 2002, Luc spent three years in the Vincentian seminary. He studied philosophy at Institut de Philosophie de St François de Sales. While in the seminary, Luc got to know some Jesuit novices working at the Vincentians’ parish and was moved by Ignatian spirituality and the Jesuits’ commitment to social justice and teaching, as well as their humility. In 2006, he entered the novitiate and worked with a L’Arche community, where people with and without disabilities live as peers, in Port-au-Prince and in a parish in Bombardopolis, helping the pastor celebrate the liturgy, visiting the sick and organizing retreats for youth groups. Luc also taught catechism for youth groups in two parishes, both meaningful experiences. In 2008, he was missioned to Bogotá, Colombia, where he learned Spanish, worked at Colegio Santa Luisa and earned a Licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Next, following the Haitian earthquake, Luc returned to Port-au-Prince to work for a year as the coordinator of the Jesuit Refugee Service pastoral team. He then became communications assistant with Jesuit Refugee Service in the city of Fonds-Parisien, near the Dominican Republic border. In 2013, Luc was missioned to Regis College at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology while serving as a deacon at Sacré-Coeur and St. Louis-de-France Parishes in Toronto. Following ordination, he will teach philosophy for one year at Instituto Superior Bonó in the Dominican Republic. Luc will celebrate his first Mass at the Parish of St. Gérard Majella in Chardonnette. (French Canada Province)
