Father Anthony McGinn, SJ, has the distinction of the longest tenure of a president at Jesuit High School in New Orleans. He began there as a history teacher in 1981 and served as principal from 1982 to ’85 when he left to finish a master’s degree in education. He returned to Jesuit New Orleans as president in 1992, after serving as principal at Jesuit High School, Tampa, for four years. He remained at Jesuit High New Orleans until 2011, but returned to serve again from 2014 to 2016.
In addition to his ministries at the Jesuit schools in New Orleans and Tampa, Fr. McGinn has served in provincial administrative roles for the Jesuits, including rector in New Orleans and provincial assistant for secondary education in St. Louis (2011-14). He currently works in the advancement office of De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis.
Father McGinn was born in New Orleans, March 22, 1948. He graduated from Jesuit High School in 1966 and entered the Society of Jesus in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, the following year. He was ordained in the Jesuit High School Student Chapel in New Orleans, July 29, 1979.
He has a B.A. in philosophy from Saint Louis University, a B.A. in theology from Heythrop College in London, an M.A. in U.S. history from the University of Texas and an M.A. in education from the University of San Francisco.
