An Open Letter from the Jesuits on the Crisis in Puerto Rico

October 3, 2017 — We have all seen the news reports of the desperate humanitarian crisis affecting our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico.

The Jesuits of Puerto Rico operate two schools and two parishes in Puerto Rico, and are part of this province. They are appealing for help for those still struggling without power, water and food.

In addition to asking for your prayers, we join the Jesuits of Puerto Rico in asking you to write, call or email your senators and Congressional representative and plead on behalf of the 3.5 million U.S. citizens living in Puerto Rico.

Fr. Flavio Bravo, SJ, superior of the Jesuit community in Puerto Rico, took the photo of the cross that crowns the chapel of Colegio of San Ignacio de Loyola, the Jesuit secondary school in San Juan. Fr. Bravo reminds us that the cross is “the challenge that brings us closer to Christ, especially the Christ who suffers at this moment. This cross invites us to follow Him with generosity and gratitude. This cross is the standard that strengthens our faith and makes our Ignatian pilgrimage noble in the midst of suffering.”

Please ask your senators and Congressional representative to deliver aid to the people of Puerto Rico.

Call 202-224-3121 for the Capitol switchboard.
