Colegio San Ignacio Remembers Fr. Fernando Picó, SJ

Dec. 17, 2018 - This November, students at Colegio San Ignacio, San Juan, celebrated the memory of Fr. Fernando Picó Bauermeister, SJ, as part of their Puerto Rico Week.

Each year, in the third week of November, schools throughout Puerto Rico celebrate la Semana de Puerto Rico, or Puerto Rico Week. During the week, students celebrate national symbols and historic events and present artistic and musical performances. This celebration commemorates the island’s discovery on November 19, 1493.

Father Picó, who died in 2017, was a member of the Society of Jesus for 57 years and a priest for 46 years. He was also an alumnus of Colegio San Ignacio. He has been honored for his work as a writer, university professor and historian.

He researched the daily life and history of the island, communicating the richness of Puerto Rican identity. His work as an historian comprises more than 30 books published on the themes of Puerto Rican history, as well as a rich bibliography of magazine and newspaper articles about local and international sociohistorical events.

Colegio history teacher Dr. Vivian Méndez said, “The historiographic achievement of Fr. Picó will serve as a model for future investigations and will dictate concrete guidelines about critical analysis of the history of our country.”

Faculty at Colegio created a pamphlet to document Fr. Picó's service to others and a portion of his numerous publications.

A Spanish-language PDF of the pamphlet is available upon request to Claire Peterson at cpeterson1@jesuits.org.
