June 4, 2019 - The Jesuit-sponsored Alum Service Corps (ASC) announced that 16 young men and women will commit a year of service to six Jesuit schools of the USA Central and Southern (UCS) Province of the Society of Jesus. In gratitude for their Jesuit education, ASC volunteers give a year of post-college service by volunteering as mentors and teachers in six UCS Jesuit schools in Denver, Kansas City and St. Louis. While living in community with each other, volunteers adopt a simple lifestyle and strive to grow spiritually.
“ASC’s Cohort 29 is a diverse representation of the ideals and experiences of Jesuit education,” said Ron Rebore, Ph.D., associate provincial assistant for pre-secondary and secondary education. “The new members desire to demonstrate and deepen their gratitude for Jesuit education through a commitment to service and community.”
The 16 new volunteers have graduated from twelve different colleges and universities, seven of them sponsored by the Jesuits, including Creighton University, Fairfield University, Regis University, Rockhurst University, Saint Louis University, Seattle University and Xavier University. Cohort 29 also includes alumni of the University of Dayton, the University of Alabama, Truman State University, Webster University and Macalester College.
Nearly all of them attended one of four Jesuit high schools, including De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, and St. Louis University High School (SLUH) in St. Louis.
ASC Cohort 29 brings an impressive breadth of experience in leadership, activities and service, as well as an enthusiastic desire to give back, often precisely because of their own Jesuit education.
In mid-July, members of ASC 29 will meet each other in person for the first time at their summer orientation in St. Louis. Following orientation, they will move into residences provided specifically for them by their schools. After this, they will begin preparing on site for their responsibilities, which include teaching, mentoring, coaching, tutoring and working closely with students and colleagues.
ASC mentors and teachers gather as a group three times during the year from across three cities for retreats as part of their Ignatian formation – training in the spirituality of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. More than 300 ASC volunteers have served students, with gratitude, in UCS Province schools for more than 25 years.
